Shadowing STAR Physical Therapy Clinic

During retreat week, juniors shadow Nashville professionals, and Lilly spent time with physical therapist Karen Griffin.
I am grateful to have been with STAR Physical Therapy Clinic Director Karen Griffin for my three-day junior year shadowing experience. She really made this a wonderful experience for me by going out of her way to explain the science behind what she was doing and to include me in her conversations with patients. The first morning I went to STAR Physical Therapy Clinic, she printed out a few of her patients’ charts so that I could follow along with their workouts. It was intimidating at first because I did not understand the terminology, but she made it a relaxing environment where I felt comfortable asking questions. I loved being her assistant, helping with laser therapy as well as the process of STEM therapy. I was very appreciative of how hands-on she let me be. There was never a dull moment.
Going into the shadowing program, I did not know what to expect. I’ve become way more aware of how important it is to take care of your body while you are still young. There were many patients with back problems, so if I start sitting up straight, maybe I won’t have to go to physical therapy later. I have a great amount of respect for Dr. Griffin. She is extremely prudent and always takes her time with each patient. She truly cares about both the physical and the emotional well being of her patients. From changing pillowcases to holding up someone’s leg, I greatly appreciated this opportunity to learn from Dr. Griffin. Not only does she give her attention to her patients, she really went out of her way to be a good shadow host to me.
