USN Joins the International Puppet Festival

by Emily Holt and Delia Seigenthaler, art teachers

You are invited to participate in the puppet parade next month as part of the International Puppet Festival taking place in Nashville June 17-19.

This year the high school 3-D art classes have been working on 9 large scale processional puppets of famous literary figures.

And when I say large scale, I mean 15 feet tall!  At least 60 USN students have contributed to the making of the puppets at every stage from planning, modeling the clay and papier mache, to the design and construction of the bodies.

This summer the puppets will be a part of the downtown public library's
International Puppet Festival.  This festival, bringing to Nashville puppet troupes from all over the world, takes place on June 17-19. This unique opportunity in Nashville happens once every three years, and we are excited to be included!

Want to participate in the parade on June 18 or learn more about it? Please email Emily Holt at eholt@usn.org.

Our puppet authors, Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, Dr. Seuss, and Maya Angelou, to name a few, will join many other wild and fantastic creations in the parade that is held on Saturday, June 18 at around 9am. The parade will start at the War Memorial Auditorium and travel down to the Nashville Public Library. Everyone from the USN community is invited to participate.  Each puppet takes three people to operate, so we could use several strong people to help carry them in the parade. We will need 27 total people and so far we have 9 slots filled.

Thank you for considering being a part of this truly wonderful event. If operating a puppet is not for you, then please do come and be a spectator in the crowd.

If you happen to miss them this time around, there are other opportunities in the works to show the puppets. We will keep you posted!
