Blood Drive Exceeds Goal

by Justin Karpinos, HS dean of student life

One of the hallmarks of the first week of second semester is the Blood Drive, an effort coordinated among the Community Service Club, the Red Cross Club, and the high school at large.
It's a bit of a challenge to put together, with HS exams in December and the winter break, but a final push our first week back helped us make the drive a success.

This year, we set a goal of obtaining 39 pints of blood, and through the efforts of 53 students, teachers, parents, and alumni, we exceeded our goal, earning 42 pints of blood.  This will go directly to patients in area hospitals, helping our community in ways we may never quite know.

Other students and faculty who were unable to donate helped in myriad ways, from checking in donors at the registration table, to supporting donors through the process, to baking cookies and brownies to keep sugar levels up after the donations.

I've heard many stories from individuals in the USN community over the past week about how they, or their loved ones, have needed units of blood this past year.  It's great to witness our community step forward to assist those who will need this; the Red Cross continually reminds us that there is no substitute for blood donations.

Special thanks to everyone who donated and volunteered, to the Operations staff for helping us transform the Multipurpose Room for the day, and to Megan Kasselberg '16 for spearheading this year's drive.

See you in 2017!
