HS Volleyball Advances in District Tournament
The girls' volleyball team advanced to the district consolation finals for the first time in over five years. The Tigers started off the first round of district in the hole against Davidson Academy. The Bears took a 2-0 lead after the first two games and needed just one more win to advance to the district semifinals. The Tigers clawed their way to a lead in the third game and won 25-17 to give them momentum. The girls never looked back as they won game four 25-14 to tie the match.
USN jumped out to an early lead in the final game to 15 points, but Davidson started a comeback and cut the lead to 6-4. USN would come up with a big side out to regain the serve and Kiana Jansen served out the final 8 points of the game to give the Tigers the win.
The team turned around and played top-seeded St. Cecilia less than thirty minutes after their dramatic comeback win over Davidson Academy. The Scarabs jumped out to a big lead early in the first game and the Tigers were on their heels, losing 25-11. USN found some rhythm in the second game and held a lead late in the game at 20-15, but St Cecilia rallied to take the lead and then win 25-23. The Scarabs won the third game as well, sending the Tigers to the consolation finals.
The Tigers matched up with Zion Christian in the consolation finals to see who would advance to the Region Tournament. Zion started off the first game strong and won 25-17. USN battled back in the second game and looked like they might take this game late, but a surge by Zion sealed their second game at 25-23. USN didn't fade away though and fought back to win game three. Zion took a lead early in the fourth game and kept that distance long enough to take the match with a 25-20 win.
The girls' advancement in the district tournament is their best finish in more than five years. Annie Weimerskirch was named to All-District First Team and Kiana Jansen, Lindsay Hardy, and Jade Williams were all named to All-District Second Team.
HS Girls' Soccer Secures Top Seed in District Tournament
The girls' soccer team got a huge win over Christ Presbyterian Academy last Thursday. Kara Jade Gordon led the team with four goals in the game against CPA. Despite the fact that the Tigers were down 1-0 in the first thirteen minutes, they rallied back scoring 2 goals in the first half, giving USN the lead at halftime. The first goal came from a ball from Courtney Rabb to Kara Jade Gordon, beating the CPA defenders and firing a goal. In the last 2 minutes of the half, the Rabb sisters combined. Kaitlyn Rabb played a ball to Courtney Rabb, who rifled a shot over the goalkeeper, catching her off her line.
USN didn't waste any time putting another goal in at the start of the second half. Kaitlyn Rabb picked up her second assist of the game when she played a ball to Gordon in the first minute, who placed her shot past the goalkeeper, making the score 3-1. Four minutes later, Kaitlyn Rabb was taken down in the box, earning the Tigers a penalty kick. Kelly McHugh stepped up, finishing the penalty kick, giving USN a 4-1 lead. USN returned the favor and allowed CPA a penalty kick that cut the lead down to 4-2, but that didn’t stop the Tigers from scoring.
The last three goals of the game came in the last five minutes of play. Gordon scored two more goals with assists from Nora Lee and Karishma Patel. In the last seconds of the game, Karishma Patel fired a shot to score the final goal of the game, making the final score 7-2.
The girls' soccer team secured the top seed in the district tournament with a 3-0 win over Zion Christian last Tuesday. The team will play on Saturday at the River Campus at 2pm against the winner of the St. Cecilia and Zion Christian game being played on Thursday.
The winner will play on Tuesday in the championship game with a guaranteed spot in the region tournament, while the losing team will play in the consolation finals in an elimination game.

More Hardware, Lots of PRs at Greater Louisville Classic
After months of battling heat and humidity, the Tiger harriers made the most of the fall weather at the Greater Louisville Classic. Nearly all of the runners ran seasonal, if not lifetime, personal records (PRs), attributable to the conditions, both physiological and meteorological. When the dust cleared, the boys took home a souvenir Louisville Slugger bat for their third place efforts, and the girls finished a strong 14th, as they easily had their fastest team average this season.
The boys had a good if not spectacular day, but still managed to defeat the 6th, 9th, and 11th ranked teams in the state of Kentucky, losing only to two powerhouse teams from West Virginia (ranked #2 and #4 in the state). The team's pack running made the fine finish possible, as only 25 seconds separated the team's first runner, Dylan Groos, from its 5th, Simpson Tanner. In between were Wolf Robinson, Mackenzie Myers, and Kellon Patey, and Duncan Clark and Chandler Floyd were not far behind the scoring five.
The girls attacked the course's second half, moving up well through the field as the race got tough. This resulted in huge PRs for Lydia Warren and Josephine Zenker, the team's top two finishers. Lauryn Cravens was just behind Josephine, and Maggie Young and Talia Barton were not far back in the large field, and the team averaged under 22 minutes for the first time this season.
The JV boys modeled the girls' strategy and went hard from the gun. Brad Johnson ran a sub-19 minute PR, leading the way ahead of Sykes Cargile, also under 19. Only a few seconds behind were Conner Shockley, A.J. Dykens-Hodapp, Conner Thompson, and Silas Wuerth. Eli Horton snuck under 20 minutes for the first time in his "career." The JV girls closed things out, and Brooke Thompson and Natalie Connor both closely followed Hannah Roth across the line. For Natalie, it was a seasonal best time.
The teams are off to a fine start in Championship Season, and they return to action in the Midstate Championships this Saturday, October 11 at Sharp Springs Park in Smyrna.
