Combined Swim Team Defeats Centennial

Justin Karpinos

In our very own pool, boys win 129-38; girls fall 115-46; combined team wins 175-153.

The USN swim team hosted Centennial High School November 17.  Our boys won decisively 129-38, while our girls fell 115-46.  The boys’ margin of victory gave us the combined win, 175-153.

On the boys’ side, USN swept first and second places in all three relays and also took first place in all eight individual events.  Logan Jones, Michael Ng, and Holt Akers-Campbell each captured two events, while McLain Gore and Justin Maffett each had one win.  These four were joined by Anders Hahnemann, Tom Coogan, and Cord Walker in their relay wins.

Notably, Logan Jones’ 200 freestyle  (#8), Michael Ng’s 100 free (#8), and Holt Akers-Campbell’s 500 freestyle (#8) made it onto the USN all-time top 10 list.

Other impressive swims came from John Coogan, who swam two lifetime bests (including a 7-second drop in the 200 free), William Doak, who earned his first Region qualifying time in the 100 fly, and Will Johns, who dropped two seconds in his 100 free and added three good relay splits.

Our girls were led by Sarah Alberts, who finished second in the 160 IM and 100 butterfly, and Alison Zhong, who won the 60 freestyle.  Other strong swims came from Jaisal Merchant, who is now just off the Region qualifying time in the 100 breast, and McKenzie Andrews, who competed fearlessly in her first meet ever.

Following this meet, the boys improve to 3-0, while the girls fall to 1-2.  Our combined record improves to 2-1.  The Tigers’ next meet is Wednesday, December 2 at TSU against Ensworth.  The meet starts at 5:30 P.M.
