Teams Light up Saturday Night!
The cross country teams opened their seasons in fine fashion at Saturday Light Fever held on the state championship course.
The cross country team vibes were as hype as the nighttime atmosphere at tonight’s season-opening Saturday Light Fever meet. Held on the state championship course, the assembled fields were very talented.
That didn’t deter our young Tigers, and they competed like veterans - enthusiastic veterans! The JV boys were the first race, as the sun dipped below the lake, and they set the tone of enthusiastic hard work that persisted through all the races. Led by our senior Cooper Wengraf-Simons, the team moved up throughout the distance, unlike many over-enthusiastic other runners. Major kudos to our many first-time runners on completing the race - Chase Ginsberg, Krish Nachnani, Beau Jones, Jack Barocas, Gibson Hurley, Dalton Dervan, Devin McAteer, and Indie Hong. The boys placed 17th in a field of 32 teams.
The girls varsity took the line next, a small but mighty crew of seven. They “cooked it up”- the team’s race motto - a solid season opener. Led by sophomore Madeleine Wiseman, who debuted a minute faster than last year, the team has a strong number two in Liv O’Hara. Jackie Seale was over two minutes faster than last year. The next three were separated by 35 seconds , led by two newcomers in junior Laura Fonseca and freshman Emily Mallal, with Adelaide Ritter right behind. Freshman Sevi Bruce showed incredible persistence and closed out her first high school race as the team’s number seven.
The boys varsity was the final race of the night. This is undoubtedly the youngest varsity we’ve had since 2002 - tonight’s top ten featured 1 senior, 1 junior, and the rest freshmen and sophomores. The team executed a smart race plan perfectly, being patient as the field went out too fast and then taking advantage of passing slowing runners. Jack Fruin battled illness and was just outkicked by Drew Zwerner at the line to lead the way, and then came a deluge of young runners. The next five runners - Griffin Davidson, Caleb Little, Caleb Freifeld, Dylan Omary - were within 37 seconds of one another (it should be noted that it was Dylan’s second 5km of the day, and Griffin and Henry had played a soccer match earlier in the afternoon). The boys finished 19th in a strong field, with some of the top teams in the state present - for reference, the boys were the top D2A team in the race.
The teams will train a bit this week, then retreat, then re-emerge after Labor Day to keep working and improving!
