USN played with heart and energy, but Valor scored two goals back to back with 5 minutes left in the match. USN lost 0-2.
With thunder and lightning nipping at their heels, the refs, teams, and fans wasted no time jumping into the game. In fact this game was cut short with only two 20 minute halves. This group hadn’t even practiced together as a JV team, so it was very experimental for everyone, especially in terms of positions. USN did a great job though. While Valor was able to keep possession most of the time, they weren’t able to push through USN’s defense. The midfielders and defenders were doing a great job pressuring and preventing any counter attacks. And the USN forwards stayed aggressive, which made Valor have to honor their position. The game stayed 0-0 for most of the game, with neither team giving up much. A few attempts for each team, but nothing threatening. However, with 5 minutes left in the match, USN had a miscommunication in their defense, enabling Valor two back-to-back goals. Because of the weather the match was wrapped up, leaving no time for USN to counter attack.
Despite not winning there was great leadership from Ava Kavalali, Piper Petraglia, and Corina Chalos, all of whom played multiple positions as the team needed and stayed positive and vocal! Margot Phillips and Alayna Thompson really anchored USN’s defense and they’ll only push their defensive line to be better everyday. It’s an exciting group of young ladies and I can’t wait to see what they can do within this season.
