MS Quiz Bowl team wins 1st tournament

At a recent tournament, all four USN teams came home with a trophy and won their final matchs en route to a tournament win. Matthew Golann '29, Asher Huffman '29, Lucas Lupu '31, and Vihaan Sinha '29 were crowned the champions. Clio Cherry-Pulay '29, Elliot George '29, Harper Hughey '29, and Oren Schwartz '29 came home with the seventh-place trophy. Rose Doyle '30, James Keiper '31, Neel Sinha '31, and Claire Yu '30 won the "Bronze Division" of the tournament. Anna Brook '30, Katie Jane Bruehl '30, Reya Roy '30, and Townes Van Zandt '30 earned a first-round bye in the "Copper Division."

On Saturday, October 19, the USN Middle School Quiz Bowl Team won the 13th Annual Fall Invitational Middle School Academic Challenge at Gallatin High School. Consequently, the team will receive an invitation to NAQT’s National Championship in Chicago in May. The team also won the Bronze and Copper Divisions of the Tournament. Each of USN's four teams at the tournament won a trophy.

Matthew Golann '29, Asher Huffman '29, Lucas Lupu '31, and Vihaan Sinha '29 went 5-0 in the tournament's opening rounds and earned the second seed in the playoffs. They won their first 3 playoff games by an average score of 438 to 110. In the finals, they faced the first-seed Avery Trace Middle School, which placed eighth in last year’s National Championships and had the sixth-highest scorer at mationals. Against this formidable opponent, Matthew, Asher, Lucas, and Vihaan went up 255-0. They went on to win 440-235 and were crowned the champions.

Clio Cherry-Pulay '29, Elliot George '29, Harper Hughey '29, and Oren Schwartz '29 came home with the seventh-place trophy. Their only loss in the morning rounds was to the powerful Avery Trace. With the highest point average of the one-loss teams, Clio, Elliot, Harper, and Oren earned the fifth seed in the playoffs. In their final playoff match, they were losing to Glasgow Middle School of Kentucky 125 to 120 at the half. They came back to win 345 to 190 for seventh place.

Rose Doyle '30, James Keiper '31, Neel Sinha '31, and Claire Yu '30 won the "Bronze Division" of the tournament. In the semifinals, they defeated Our Lady of Perpetual Help. They knocked off Merrol Hyde B in the finals 285 to 120.

Based on their preliminary play, Anna Brook '30, Katie Jane Bruehl '30, Reya Roy '30, and Townes Van Zandt '30 earned a first-round bye in the "Copper Division." In the semi-finals, they beat Shafer Middle School 350 to 60. They fell behind 145 to 50 in the finals to Brentwood Middle School C, but it didn't phase them. They answered the following five questions to take the lead 150-145 going into the final question. Reya powered the last question to seal the win.

The Tournament recognized the top 20 individual scorers. Seven USN players made the top 20 list: Oren (7), Lucas (10T), Reya (10T), Matthew (14), Asher (16) and Harper (17).

The team thanks Seventh Grade Science Teacher Heather Webber, USN parents Noam Lupu and Maria Rivera-Lupu, Tracey George and Chris Guthrie, and Sonal Gupta for coaching teams. The team also appreciates the many parents who came to cheer on the team.
