HS athletics recaps for December 6-12

While the bowling team closed the season out in style, the basketball teams put on a show during All School Spirit Night.
Basketball
The boys basketball won its first district game of the season with a 65-55 win over Columbia Academy on Tuesday, December 10. Braylin Davis ‘26 led all scorers with 20 points, and Clay Payne ‘25 added 16 points for the team. The Tigers started the game with an early lead and continued to extend and maintain that lead throughout the game. They played tough on defense and limited the Bulldogs scoring chances by mixing defenses. They are back in action on Friday and Saturday on the road at Middle Tennessee Christian and Grace Christian in district action.

The girls team lost their first district game of the year, 62-26, against Columbia Academy. The Tigers played tough in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs finished at the basket and forced USN to take outside contested looks. The Tigers' shots didn’t drop until after halftime, and the Bulldogs had already built a lead. Tessa Chomsky ‘25 and Elisabeth Crane ‘27 led the team with 8 points each. They will travel to Middle Tennessee Christian and Grace Christian this weekend for district games.

Bowling
The boys bowled well after an unusually slow start to the match. Despite this early slow start, the Tigers had solid performances through the first two American 10-pin games. Seniors Joshua Muellenbach ‘25, Rohan Ehrig ‘25, and Stewart Hall ‘25 all earned points in the first game, with Joshua leading the way with an impressive finish that included six straight strikes for a 180-game to lead the team. Fellow senior Connor Harris ‘25 lost his match but finished with a 177-game.

The Tigers responded to a slow start with five straight strikes to close out the first baker match with a 10-pin win to force the winner-take-all final baker. USN started slow again in this match and found their rhythm late, with Ensworth a couple of frames ahead. As Ensworth closed out their final frame, Rohan Ehrig stepped up to knock down three straight strikes to close the gap to five pins as the Tigers saw their season end with a 16-11 final score.

The girls bowling team won their region quarterfinal match 14-13 against Ezell-Harding at Smyrna Bowling Center. The team was led by Z Aulino '26 with a 130 and Leah Sapp '25 with a 129. They will be the first girls bowling team to represent USN at the TSSAA State Tournament despite the loss to Lipscomb in the region semifinals.

They earned the third seed for the middle region by forfeiting against Pope Prep on Thursday, December 12 in the consolation match of the region tournament. The Tigers will now have a month to prepare for the state tournament on Wednesday, January 22.
