Mr. Mosser's 4th Grade,

1998-99!

On Friday morning, September 25, 1998, at 8:00 am by Nashville, Tennessee time, and at 10:00 pm by the clock on the wall at Canadian Academy in Kobe, Japan, two classrooms full of kids got together. The students in Japan were sleeping over in their classroom for this event. Reaching out through computer videoconferencing from within our new Lower School computer lab, 3rd graders at University School of Nashville by turns pulled up a chair in front of the Connectix camera eye and looked at the computer screen to see one video frame containing their own images and another frame displaying the inquisitive faces of the kids with whom they will be penpals over the coming school year. The chat which follows may at times seem hard to follow if you weren't in the room, but stick with it! We want to share it with you, along with some images captured from a videocamera which was trained on the computer screen. An amusing aspect of this chat was the persistence of Gregory, one of Mr. Mosser's children from last year, who connected to the conference from his own Kobe home and was so excited to be chatting that he had a hard time staying out of the activity, even though Mr. Mosser repeatedly reminded him of other options. We always welcome "lurkers" to our conferences, with the understanding that they are to keep their cams turned off to facilitate faster communication between the parties of the conference. My kids had already visited the individual student pages created at the Canadian Academy web site, and were armed with curiosity that was specific. Note Jared's unusual request of his keypal, Nirmaan! It is our hope that the coming exchanges of information and shared work will help to build some lasting friendships and also that all our students might benefit from discovering interests they share with other children half-way around the world!
